Latter Davies provide advice and consultation on renovating and altering listed residential properties and listed buildings suitable for conversion to residential use. By analysing the attributes of the building and the context of its listing we design creative and contemporary solutions, discernible from, but respectful of the texture, grain and detail of the original.
Projects include several houses within Rhiwbina Garden Village, Cardiff. The village consists of about 180 listed dwellings dating from 1913. It is also a Conservation Area. Its design is in the Arts and Crafts style typical of the period’s Garden Village Movement, with a limited number of design cues and a limited palette of materials creating harmony.
Latter Davies has designed alterations forming modern living spaces. Whilst they are in keeping with strict conservation constraints our aim is to reaffirm the original ethos of the Garden Village movement. Parker and Unwin; its main promoters; believed that the householder should enjoy good visual contact with their garden from the house; so as to be relieved by “fresh green to speak of spring, or a falling leaf to tell of autumn” and the introduction of plentiful sunlight which was to “be looked upon as an absolute essential…..” Some of these extensions; together with features which give the Garden Village its distinctive character are depicted.
